FASA 365 Day 357, The Eaters of the Dead. For 1879 Written By Joel Fowler
I would be very interested in a confirmed encounter with these creatures. The accounts we do have come from Samsut prisoners and always come second or third hand. Most on them come up when Military intelligence asks questions about what lies beyond the Edeesmatu, the name the Samsut use for their own territories. Obviously they questioners are looking for ways to outflank the enemy, but as often as not they get tall tales of seemingly fantastic beasts. My contacts often pass me these notes, correctly assuming I will be interested. One the recurring creatures that get mentioned a lot are the Eaters of the Dead. Their bodies are human like and no hairier than your average Londoner. Their heads however are like those of “carrion eating dogs” I would consider calling them Anubi given the jackal like appearance of their heads and the connection with corpses. They are apparently intelligent and can be negotiated with, they certainly use weapons and armor. The Samsut seem to have warred with them in the early years of their colonization of the Edeesmatu, and this became more fervent I suspect after the use of the undead became common. I heard mention of a Great work of lyric poetry “The Song of Samsut” that talks of these creatures along with the other travails, obstacles and triumphs of the early years of Samsut History. I suspected I would have difficulty finding a translation of this work, and I indeed did find just that, until one of my correspondents provided me with a translation.
