FASA 365 Day 175, Dragon, Gritahlkohn (gree-TALL-cone).

“An overheard briefing and an Adventurers Guild Hall.”

Guild Master: Let me tell you a tale of an epic battle between a Great Dragon, Gritahlkohn, and a decrepit old wizard.
Gritahlkohn was so big and so devastating and so… well, have you ever heard of the Northern Country of Kihpal?

Adventurer: No.

Guild Master: Exactly.

Guild Master: (continues) Now it is a Frozen wasteland of tundra and mountains. A historically preserved battlefield of perpetual winter.
You see, the wizard was SO powerful, he was able to “seal” the dragon. To freeze him. For all eternity.
Or until some cataclysmic global warming event occurs.

Adventurer: So, my quest is to go north. To check in on this Gritahlkohn. To make sure he’s still sealed in his Mountain?

Guild Master: (chuckling) No, no, The Dragon IS the Mountain.

Artists Note: How bout it, adventurers; would you take the quest?

FASA 365 Day 172, Lava Spirit, 1879.
The domain of these spirts is near any naturally occurring source of great heat or any fire that is not controlled. They embody the pure destructive force of fire as destroyer and cleanser. They manifest as beings of molten burning rock having no consistent form or shape but often shifting to mimic both summoner and foe. They are ornery creatures that will balk against any order that doesn’t lead to something being scorched or reduced to ashes, and will burn anything that the foolish summoner doesn’t tell them not to.
Highly recommended that summoning these spirits should be limited to only as a weapon of last resort.
Domain: Near to any uncontrolled fire and any natural source of extreme heat including lava and hot springs.
Banned: Any area where the temperature is kept below ambient.
Artists Note: Yup, he is truly, a hunka hunka burnin’ love.

FASA 365 Day 171, Dissimulato Canem, (Camoe’d K-9) 2-3ft. omnivore
A domesticated pet, to the “Earthdawn” races of obsidiman.
These dog rocks, being prone to laying still for long stretches; often find, when they wake, that vegetation has taken root.
Giving them the looks akin to the Eloko, (see “Champion’s Challenge Graphic Novel Vol 2, “Challenges of a Madman” pg 96).
This guy is now a living walking mound of grasses, mushrooms, and in this case; dandelions.
Which is why, when his human, farmer, “owner” adopted him; he named him… “Patch”
(See what I did there? Dandelion – Patch. Get it?)

FASA Creature Concept 365 Challenge Day 170

FASA 365 Day 170, Un-Named.
Artists Note: In my experience creature concepting, if there’s one thing I have learned, its that when an idea pops into your head, draw it.
It may not be a great idea, it may not get used for the project, It may not become cannon, draw it anyway. Give it just as much attention and care as anything else you’ve drawn.
Even if it’s only to get it down on paper… and OUT of your head.
Why?
Because the folks at Lucasfilm are still rummaging through Ralph McQuarrie’s work, for what was rejected then and wanted now. Don’t believe me? Take a look at “Star Wars Rebels”.

FASA Creature Concept 365 Challenge Day 169

FASA 365 Day 169, Retrorsum bestia, (Bass-ackwards Beast). 25-30 ft. Amphibious. Herbivore, Found in or near pools made by waterfalls.
For Reference… The head, in this sketch, IS facing forward. The chest plate, or back armor (depending on your point of view) is thick and heavy and seemingly impervious. The fins down its spine are equipped with sharp sturdy quills to protect the neck.
You may be wondering, how does it eat and drink?
Being amphibious, It can drink and eat while swimming,
On land, the neck can pivot to near 180° when foraging trees and plants. However, it cannot swallow in that position as the esophagus is constricted in the pivoted position.
As for drinking, on land, well, most would assume it positions itself in some manner of “handstand”. No, not the case.
The reason it lives near waterfalls is for drinking necessities. It backs into waterfalls, and turns its head back and forth. Filling its mouth with water and then around again to swallow.
In dire situations, it has been known to drink the morning dew off large plants. And, of course, there’s always heavy rains. But these are not reliable or sustainable water sources.
Artists Note: Ok, now I’m just gettin’ silly.
